Give Your Leftover Rotis (Chapati) A New Life!

Leftover food is an unavoidable consequence of living in India. Despite our best efforts to cook only what we need and to eat all that we cook, sometimes it just happens that we are left with leftovers. The bane of most Indian mothers around, leftovers are not as guilty a culprit as they have been painted. However, the one thing that ticks off most people in leftover food is left over rotis. Reason being that people generally count when they cook the rotis and technically, there should never be leftover rotis. However, if you’re left with some rotis, there are a lot of things that you can do.

First of All!

These are not the dark ages and we all have refrigerators. However, if you are a student or a bachelor in a transferrable job or just haven’t saved enough for one, you can always rent a refrigerator in Noida, Delhi, Gurgaon, and other cities. This is important; for if you do not store the rotis right, you might just end up with an upset stomach, cursing leftover rotis (chapati) of being villains. If your kitchen is cool enough (in the winters), you may leave them in a casserole, outside, but in the summers, storing them in the fridge is a good idea.

Getting Them Ready

There is no denying the fact that rotis become rather dry and brittle by next morning, and are not fun to eat. To get them back to a good condition, there are a couple of things you can do:

  • Fry ‘em: Put them on a pan and heat them with a little oil or ghee; transform them into sort of paranthas.
  • Heat ‘em: Take a clean soft cloth, wet it slightly, wrap it around the rotis and pop it into the microwave. The rotis will absorb the moisture and get soft again. Don’t let the lack of a microwave stop you, for these appliances too can be rented in all major cities, so you don’t have a lot to worry about!

Cook Them up Nice and Good

  • Rolls: Get some fresh veggies (or even last night’s sabzi) and roll it up in the left over roti. Heat the roll over a pan, with some oil or ghee, so the roti gets a bit crunchy and you can enjoy a delicious breakfast roll.
  • Quesadilla: Grab a roti (chapati), layer on it some cheese and chilies (or whatever you want in your dish), put another roti on top and cook; it’s that simple!
  • Egg roll: Heat your pan and whisk an egg with salt and ginger and coriander (your choice of ingredients really). Oil up the pan and pour your whisked egg over it, and as soon as you can (before the egg cooks all the way through), put your roti on top, so the egg sticks to it while getting cooked. Enjoy with some mayo!

While you don’t always have to take a microwave or refrigerator on rent in Noida, or any other major city; if you want to start repurposing your leftovers, instead of letting them go to waste, having these appliances just makes it a lot easier. The only thing that can limit you here is your own imagination.
